RECENT JAIL OPPOSITION

July 19-20: At White Center's Jubilee Days Fair, HPAC members collected signatures, networked with neighboring communities, and marched in the parade (left)! Total Petition sigs: 1800+

July 21: At the July HPAC meeting, Fleets and Facilities deputy director Mary Pearson and Office of Policy and Management policy adviser Catherine Cornwall (below left) attempted to answer questions regarding the city's process of siting jails.

After that, HPAC leaders reported preparations to continue challenging the city proposals at the 7-26 Public Forum. Please come and support us!

July 12: HPAC members collected signatures at West Seattle Summerfest. Most fairgoers had not heard about the jail proposals.

June 26: First CITY PUBLIC FORUM attended by vocal residents of Highland Park, White Center, Riverview, South Park, Georgetown, and High Point. Testimony by 15 spokespersons.

June 23rd, 2008: HPAC held a third meeting to address opposition to the city's jail proposals.

June 11, 2008:
HPAC Chair Dorsal Plants and several neighbors introduced the City Jail controversy to the 34th District Democrats. County Councilmember Dow Constantine and Rep. Sharon Nelson reaffirmed their support for our position.
Spokespersons for City Councilmembers Tom Rassmussen and Tim Burgess said they also agree with us. Report & video on West Seattle Blog.

June 2, 2008:
This was our second meeting to address Seattle's proposal for a City Jail in either of two sites in Highland ParkOur King County Council member Dow Constantine and State Representative Sharon Nelson spoke in support of our opposition, and advised us how to continue protesting effectively. NEW OFFICERS were elected. Committees were formed and their Chairs chosen. They began to plan organized efforts for our community's jail opposition. Excellent report and video are on West Seattle Blog. A diary by Dina Johnson is front-paged on Washblog.com

MAY 19: See meeting minutes
This was our community's initial response to the city's proposed jail locations in Highland Park. City representatives made a presentation explaining the proposal to 70+ residents. It was met with disapproval and many questions.

Next special meeting is the THIRD Monday, July 21st
in order to prepare for July 26th City Jail Opposition.

FEBRUARY, March, and April 08: members of the Samoan community presented their proposal to utilize Westcrest Park (after the Reservoir is lidded) for their Cricket league games.
